The beauty of the nature, the zealous, unobtrusive, honest and hospitable people have contributed to, that Medimurje has been called now "HORTUS CROATIAE", the flowergarden of Croatia.

Sveti Martin na Muri has been ever called Pomorje, later on Sveti Martin and the Hungarian rulers called this village Muraszentmárton. The Sveti (saint) has been forbidden by the communist regime in the former Yugoslavia.

After the fall of communism in 1990, Croatia became independent and the municipality got back the abbreviation Sveti.

Archaeological discoveries showed, that in the near of local church, a military barrack -from Roman period- was settled. That means that Sveti Martin na Muri was located on the border between Dalmatia and Illiricum-Roman Kingdom of that time. The strategic road passed from Ptuj (Petovium - Slovenia) via Sveti Martin na Muri to Szomathely in Hungary.

This name has been still used nowadays in the ecclesiastical scripts.
